The LD40 ceilometer is installed at the CESAR observatory (www.cesar-observatory.nl). The LD40 has a measuring interval of 15 s, but the records are retrieved every 12 s. In post-processing these are reduced again to 15 s. interval. Data are calibrated with the method described by O'Conner et al (JTech., 21, 777-786, 2004). Cloud base heights are calculated by the ceilometer software. The details of the cloud base height retrieval are not known. Ceilometer data are stored by the LD40 software in a specific KNMI format which applies data compression for the backscatter data.
