Christopher Frank (cfrank@meteo.uni-koeln.de), Institution: University of Cologne Institute for Geophysics and MeteorologyDescription
Cloud base altitude for a maximum of three cloud layers. Time steps where an instrument did not measure are flagged with _FillValue. Time steps where an instrument did measure but detected no cloud - either because of clear sky or because the lowest cloud layer was too thick to detect potential cloud layers lying above - are flagged with missing_value.
Limitations: Second and third cloud layer only detectable if first (lowest) cloud layer is not optically too thick.
Provenance: Data of DWD Ceilometer network, provided by IMGK, University of Cologne.
Comments: _FillValue=-999 indicates that the respective instrument was measuring but that no zcb was retrieved. The reason could be either clear-sky or an undetected upper cloud layer because the lowest cloud layer was too optically thick to be penetrated. missing_value=-888 indicates that the respective instrument was not measuring.
