CMIP6 Sea Ice Area Directory
This directory gives access to sea-ice area estimates from CMIP6 numerical models in ASCII text and netCDF file format via HTTPS. Click on the project name to get more information about the respective CMIP6 model. The catalog will be updated once new information will become available. Visualization might become available at a later stage. We offer the data sets in three flavors as detailed further below. This is version V03 of this directory published for the first time in 2022.
Last update of data set at ICDC: March 1 2024.
Note:
- For one CMIP6 model, data of different versions might exist, i.e. EC-Earth3, EC-Earth3-LR, EC-Earth3-CC and EC-Earth3-AerChem. The availability of runs [= historical, piControl, ssp119, ssp126, ssp245, ssp370, ssp460, and ssp585] depends on the CMIP6 model, and their versions. Except for model (NorESM) sets of data are the same for both hemispheres. The number of ensemble members differs between models, versions, and runs.
-
There are three different ways to get SIA from CMIP6 models:
sia_direct: SIA provided by the model itself as siarean or siareas
sia_areacell: Sea ice concentration (SIC) siconc or siconca multiplied with a grid-area-file provided by the model as areacello/a
sia_cdo: SIC siconc/a multiplied with a grid-area-file calculated via CDO
SIA is processed in the indicated priority: We first pick sia_direct and if this is not available sia_areacell then sia_cdo.
- Please find lists of the preferred methods here for the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere
- Runs "historical" and "piControl" time axes begin 1850-01-01. All sspXXX runs time axes begin 2015-01-01. The time axis is monthly and is based on the average number of days per year including leap years: 365.242196 days
- In the ASCII Text files columns denote different CMIP6 models, their versions and ensembles as indicated in the respective line; rows count time steps in ascending order, i.e. topmost rows of a respective run represent the earliest time. The delimiter is a comma.
- ASCII Text files with several runs (cases 1) and 3), see below) contain data of the runs in successive order along the rows, i.e., the first block of rows is run "historical", the second block of rows is run "piControl" and so forth.
