FTP
For the exchange of data, whether temporary or for projects, we offer an FTP server which is accessible both inside and outside our network. Access from inside or outside is handled differently and is subject to some restrictions, which are explained on this page.
Access from outside of the network
ftp.cen.uni-hamburg.de is an anonymous FTP-Server that can be accessed by anyone from anywhere. If you connect to the FTP server from outside our network, you must enter anonymous as the username and the password is your e-Mail adress.
From outside you only have the right to write in the incoming-Ordner and reading access on outgoing. Due to security reasons and to prevent malpractice it is not possible to have an exchange of data from different locations outside of our network. Only a data transfer from inside to outside and vice versa is possible.
Please create a new folder under incoming (preferably your name).
All data will only be store temporarily and will be automatically deleted after 14 days!
Access from inside the network
If you want to provide data via ftp.cen.uni-hamburg.de, you have to log in with the user guest und dem password guest.
Internally, you only have write access to the outgoing directory. Please create a separate folder in this directory (preferably your name). Also keep in mind that everyone from the internal network has full access (read and write) to your files. External partners can provide you with data via the incoming folder, see instructions above. In incoming you have read-only access within our network.
All data will only be store temporarily and will be automatically deleted after 14 days!
Establish an FTP connection
Windows: On all our Windows computers we have preinstalled the program "FileZilla". If you open itfrom the start menu you can connect to ftp.cen.uni-hamburg.de. The access data are stored in the instructions above.
Linux: A connection can be established via the command line with the command "ftp -p ftp.cen.uni-hamburg.de". For a graphical interface you can use the program "filezilla". The access data is explained in the instructions above. Make sure that the client is in passive mode by entering "passive". Otherwise you will get an error message "Unable to build data connection: Connection refused" as soon as a transfer is started.
