Supercomputing
The Earth can’t be reconstructed in a laboratory, and so for “experiments” climate and Earth system researchers have to rely on computer models and simulations.
Thanks to the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) researchers at the CEN have access to special supercomputers. Here complex processes such as thermal and energy transport in the atmosphere, on land and in the oceans are simulated using computer programs – and possible future scenarios are calculated.
The Climate Computing Center’s supercomputers and data storage facilities are tailored to these requirements. At the same time, the DKRZ staff supports research by optimizing models, and by evaluating and visualizing climate data.
