In daily data set files following level 2 products are included: (1) 3D wind vector components (u,v,w) (2) wind speed (wspeed): speed of the horizontal wind (3) wind direction (wdir): direction of the horizontal wind (4) error estimations for 3D wind vector components (u,v,w), wind speed and wind direction. Data sources were sups_joy_dlidCUST00_l1_any_v00*.nc files. Before calculating u,v,w, wspeed, and wdir radial, velocity (dv) was masked with quality mask (qdv), and data in clouds were removed by requiring that beta is smaller than 1e-5. Quality mask qwind equals 1 if wspeed and wdir are available. Uncertainty of variables was calculated based on error propagation law, and by taking into account uncertainty of radial velocity. Homogeneous wind filed was assumed.
Limitations: Measurements are only available if backscattering targets like aerosols and cloud droplets are present. Applied beta threshold does not guarantee that all hydrometeors (e.g. rain and ice crystals) are removed from analysis. Uncertainty estimations do not take into account effect of turbulence. Therefore, during convective situation uncertainties of wspeed and wdir are likely higher than given ones, and are indicated by temporally highly varying wind directions. Due to various disturbances in conversion of l
Provenance: Data of JOYCE, processed by IMGK, University of Cologne
Comments: Processed from custom scanning (with varying elevation and azimuth) level 1 data found in HD(CP)2 data base. Three beam wind retrieval. Uncertainty estimate takes into account only radial velocity uncertainty.
