Causes and impacts of climate changes in the Earth system

Land and vegetation, ocean and atmosphere are linked in our climate system, and the water, energy and carbon cycles are closely intertwined. With the help of computational models, observations and data analyses, CEN teams monitor the variability of and changes in the system, develop and test forecasting methods. This involves not only global phenomena, but also their regional manifestations. Key regions include the Arctic and Northern Africa. There is also the human factor to bear in mind: How are business, politics and society responding to climate change and its repercussions? What changes will be necessary, and which strategies to cut greenhouse emissions are sensible, efficient and realistic?

Cluster of Excellence CLIMATE, CLIMATIC CHANGE, AND SOCIETY (CLICCS)

The Cluster of Excellence CLICCS is an ambitious research program at the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) at Universität Hamburg and strong partner institutions. It deals with the overarching question: Which climate futures are possible and which are plausible? It explores how climate changes – and how society changes with it.

FOR:AFC: Evaluation of the Atlantic freshwater cycle

How variable is salinity in the Atlantic? How do freshwater and melting sea ice influence the salt content of the Atlantic and how can we improve the estimates of these processes? With the help of new data sets that can be combined with numerical models, it is now possible for the first time to specifically target these scientific questions. In this context, Research Unit 1740 of the “German Research Foundation”(DFG) focuses on the Atlantic Ocean.

The DFG-funded project involves various institutions from Hamburg, Kiel, Bremen and Bremerhaven, as well as the “German Weather Service” in Offenbach.

TREELINE – Climate Sensitivity and Response of the Treeline Ecotone in Rolwaling Himal, Nepal, to Climate Warming (In German)

In dem Projekt TREELINE untersuchen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, wie sich die Waldgrenze im Rolwaling-Tal im nepalesischen Himalaya mit dem Klimawandel verändert – denn im Zuge der Klimaerwärmung ist von einem Anstieg der oberen Waldgrenze auszugehen. Wie reagieren diese Landschaften auf Klimaänderungen und wie stark werden sie von den Menschen in der Region beansprucht? Mit einem landschaftsökologischen Ansatz und mithilfe der im Gelände erhobenen Daten, mit Ansaatexperimenten, durch Fernerkundung, Geostatistik und GIS-Anwendungen werden die klimawandelbedingten Reaktionen der Waldgrenze untersucht.

WP-KS-KW: Waldproduktivität-Kohlenstoffspeicherung-Klimawandel - Modul M2: Klimaregionalisierung (In German)

In dem Projekt Waldproduktivität-Kohlenstoffspeicherung-Klimawandel entwickeln Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler Modelle, um abzuschätzen, wie produktiv Wälder unter geänderten Klimabedingungen sind. Mit unterschiedlichen Klimaszenarien und mithilfe der Modelle werden das zukünftige Holzaufkommen und die Kohlenstoffspeicherung in den Wäldern Deutschlands präzise abgeschätzt. Auf dieser Grundlage können die künftige Entwicklung des Waldzustandes eingeschätzt und notwendige Anpassungsmaßnahmen geplant und beurteilt werden. Im Rahmen des Teilprojektes „Klimaregionalisierung“ werden für Deutschland Klimaflächendaten in hoher räumlicher Auflösung generiert, die sowohl den Zeitraum 1961-2013, als auch potenziell zukünftige Klimazustände des 21. Jahrhunderts abbilden.
