Professor Michael Schatzmann, former director of Universität Hamburg’s Meteorological Institute, is the first German scientist to receive the Helmut E. Landsberg Award. Schatzmann was selected for the award by the American Meteorological Society in recognition of his scientific work bridging the gap between meteorology and engineering in urban meteorological investigations, and for his outstanding contributions to flow and propagation models in urban environments. In 1982, Schatzmann founded the Technical Meteorology department at Universität Hamburg, and served for many years as Speaker of the Centre for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (ZMAW).
Nominees for the American Meteorological Society’s Landsberg Award are selected on the basis of excellent scientific achievements in the areas of urban meteorology and urban climatology. The award ceremony will take place during the Society’s 96th Annual Meeting on January 12, 2016 in New Orleans.
