The American Geophysical Union (AGU) has now officially named Prof. Detlef Stammer an “AGU Fellow”. The AGU, the largest international association of researchers in the field with members from more than 140 nations, awards the title in recognition of outstanding scientific contributions to Earth system research and remote sensing. The official medal presentation ceremony will take place during the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco on December 17.
Once a year the AGU selects those members whose work “represents a scientific breakthrough or major discovery, initiates a paradigm shift or proves to have a sustained, significant impact”; fewer than one in 1,000 members receive this honor. This year the AGU bestowed 62 fellowships, only 12 of which went to international members, including three in Germany.
"The AGU fellowship is a great honor and sign of international recognition – I couldn’t be happier," reports Detlef Stammer. “At the same time, this shows once again the important contribution Germany makes to international marine and climate research.” Stammer is the Director of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability, which brings together the expertise of nine university institutes and facilities. He is also a Co-Chair of Universität Hamburg’s Cluster of Excellence in climate research, CliSAP.
