Hamburg Climate Council: Four CLICCS Experts Appointed

Effective immediately, top-caliber researchers will support the Hamburg Senate with the implementation of Hamburg’s Climate Protection Ordinance and Climate Action Plan. For this purpose, the Senate has formed the Climate Council, an independent body composed of 15 members hailing from a diverse range of academic fields. Prof. Dr. Anita Engels, Prof. Dr. Daniela Jacob, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Knieling and Prof. Dr. Heinke Schlünzen, all from the Cluster of Excellence Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CLICCS), are among the members.

Prof. Dr. Anita Engels, Universität Hamburg: “How can climate protection be embedded in individual districts and quarters so as to produce positive impulses for their development? Generally speaking, at all levels climate protection has to come down to achieving a sense of active responsibility and participation among the public that is as broad as possible – and Hamburg has a number of approaches for doing so.”

Prof. Dr. Heinke Schlünzen, Universität Hamburg: “Thanks to its Climate Action Plan, Hamburg is in a good position to reduce emissions and take steps toward climate adaptation. We support the Senate by providing the latest research findings, for example, from our project Water From Four Sides. By doing so, we help to comprehensively assess the ramifications of climate change and climate adaptation that affect society at large, the city and the surrounding region.”

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Knieling, HafenCity University: “Which innovative strategies, tools and forms of collaboration can help Hamburg actively pursue climate protection and climate adaptation? We on the Climate Council supply the Senate with the latest research findings, for example, from the areas climate governance and urban transformation. By doing so, we help the city achieve its climate targets.”
