The CEN honors climate and Earth system research graduates

Last Friday Prof. Dr. Heinrich Graener, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, congratulated and bid a fond farewell to those graduates from the Department of Earth Science who completed their degrees in 2016 – as well as a doctoral graduate from the Department of Social Economics. Graener encouraged the young academics to stay curious, and to not be afraid to explore remote locations and “the road less traveled” in the pursuit of answers to their research questions.
In fact, some graduates were unable to attend the ceremony at Universität Hamburg’s Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) precisely because they were already doing so: one PhD alumnus is now conducting research at the Neumayer Station in the Arctic, while a graduate from the international master’s program Integrated Climate System Sciences recently began working in China.
As the various certificates were awarded, the impressive diversity of research topics became apparent: from the plastic contamination levels in freshwater ecosystems, to the impacts of climate change on agriculture in Pakistan, to how tropical cyclones over the cold North Atlantic are currently changing. All told, 92 Master’s students, one Diploma student and 43 PhDs from the Department of Earth Science completed their degrees last year.
Following the ceremony, the brand-new graduates joined their supervisors, advisors, family and friends at a reception and rounded out the day with a glass of champagne and buffet.The event was made possible by the financial support of the association “Friends and Supporters of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability.
