Last week, Jürgen Sündermann, a retired professor of Universität Hamburg, was awarded the Albert Defant Medal in honor of his academic excellence and teaching achievements in the fields of ocean tides, physical oceanography, and interdisciplinary shelf sea research.
A progressive thinker, Jürgen Sündermann established innovative structures at the University. By combining meteorology, oceanography, hydrobiology, geophysics and marine chemistry he crossed traditionally rigid disciplinary boundaries. As founding director of the Center for Marine and Climate Research (ZMK), Sündermann thus paved the way for the CEN.
Since its inception in 1986, the Albert Defant Medal has been conferred by the German Meteorological Society (DMG) for stellar accomplishments. Jürgen Sündermann shares this year’s award with Monika Rhein, a fellow oceanographer at the University of Bremen.
