Last weekend, researchers from CEN and the Cluster of Excellence CliSAP presented their research on board the "Ludwig Prandtl". Blessed with perfect weather, the open ship event on Friday and Saturday took place amid spectacular scenery. The shallow research vessel from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht was anchored in front of the Elbe Philharmonic Hall at Hamburg’s HafenCity. About 1,000 visitors accepted the invitation to gain an insight into the world of oceanography and climate research.

Inside the research labs as well as on deck, visitors were welcome to talk with the scientists and inspect all measuring instruments. Dr. Sebastian Lindhorst and CliSAP doctoral candidate Marco Wunsch from Universität Hamburg’s Geological Institute took visitors time traveling across the bottom of the sea. Devices designed to analyze sedimentary layers help the two geologists investigate how climate and ocean currents have changed within extensive periods of time. Kevin Wiegand and Tim Hempel from the University’s Institute of Oceanography conducted research aboard the Prandtl, too. They examined how surging Elbe water expands in the North Sea.
