Since January, Prof. Detlef Stammer serves as director of the research project “Climate and Oceans” (CLIVAR), one of four core projects from the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). His co-director is Prof. Lisa Goddard from Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
As a global association of leading climate researchers, the objectives of the WCRP are to better grasp changes in our climate system, to coordinate research at the international level, and to make the results of that research available to policymakers and society. The complex interactions between atmosphere, land, water and ice play a key role. CLIVAR primarily concentrates on the variability, predictability and changes in the ocean and climate: “Under the auspices of the WCRP and CLIVAR, researchers around the planet are working together to gather and analyze new data on climate processes and the ocean, and to simulate variations with the help of models,” explains Detlef Stammer, Director of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN). “Thanks to WCRP and CLIVAR, these efforts are now internationally coordinated – an invaluable advance for the research community.”
In cooperation with the WCRP, an international workshop focusing on regional sea-level rises was held at the CEN last November. The spotlight topic “Sea Level Rise and Regional Impacts” is one of the WCRP’s “Grand Challenges” and is also spearheaded by Detlef Stammer, who expects that the coordination of the CLIVAR project will also bring further stimulus for Hamburg-based climate research: “This is a major endorsement and reflects Hamburg’s international standing with regard to climate and climate change research.”
