CLICCS hosts World Climate Research Programme workshop

The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) has been coordinating international climate research for over 40 years, and the successes of the COP21 (Paris Agreement) were to a great extent achieved thanks to its efforts. In response to the resolutions passed at the conference, the WCRP is now reformulating its goals.

For this purpose, more than 30 leading international researchers have now gathered for a strategic workshop at the Cluster of Excellence “Climate, Climatic Change, and Society” (CLICCS). Until Wednesday, they will work to define the WCRP’s new research objectives, and to translate them into concrete questions and work packages. In the future, its research will chiefly focus on four main elements: short-term climate predictions, future projections, attaining a deeper understanding of the climate system, and providing decision-relevant climate information.  

“The outcomes of the workshop will have far-reaching influences on climate research in the next ten years. They will also be highly relevant for the activities of the CLICCS,” says CEN Director Prof. Detlef Stammer, who has headed the WCRP since 2019. The WCRP was initiated by and is co-sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the International Science Council (ISC), and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
