Last Friday Prof. Detlef Stammer, Director of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN), congratulated this year’s graduates from the Department of Earth Sciences and wished them a fond farewell.
Graduates from six different Master’s degree programs were honored, as well as new PhDs from the Department of Earth Sciences. As the professors awarded the diplomas and certificates, the impressively broad range of subjects to be found in the discipline became apparent: from methane-gas prevention in waste management, to the permafrost soil in Siberia, the students’ final papers reflected diverse topics. In turn, each of the “freshly baked” PhDs from 2017 presented the topic of his or her dissertation, using concise and accessible language to do so – a challenge, but also valuable practice for future presentations and Science Slams.
Following the official ceremony, the graduates gathered with their families and advisors at the University’s Geological-Paleontological Museum to raise a glass and celebrate the completion of their studies.
Later in the evening, the Partner Cities Prize was jointly awarded by the association “Harmony 1789” (Hamburg) and the association “Friends and Supporters of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability.” The 5,000-euro prize is granted for outstanding final papers that address the topics water, the ocean or climate and were written at Universität Hamburg. This year, Elena Hengstmann was selected for her excellent Master’s thesis in the field of Geography, in which she explored the micro- and macroplastic pollution in three sections of beach on the island Rügen.
The event was made possible by the support of the association “Friends and Supporters of the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability.”
