Investigating pressing questions on global warming and identifying potential solutions: with this focus, the “Young Climate Scientists Award” bestowed by Universität Hamburg’s Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) has now begun its second round: outstanding bachelor’s and master’s theses addressing climate-related topics can be submitted until March 31, 2022. Final papers focusing on the natural sciences, social sciences, economics or humanities and written at Universität Hamburg are welcome. First prize is €5,000, second is €3,000 and third is €2,000.
The prize money is provided by the Gesellschaft Harmonie von 1789 e.V.: “We want to reinforce Hamburg’s standing as a center for climate research. And we particularly want to provide support for young researchers. Our hope is that the prize will motivate them and further support them,” says Jan Themlitz from the Gesellschaft Harmonie.
According to Prof. Dr. Detlef Stammer, Director of the CEN: “Our students represent the future of climate research. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, many young talents have successfully completed their theses. We’re happy to see that and want to support them.” Katharina Fegebank, Second Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and Senator at Hamburg’s Ministry of Science, Research, Equality and Districts, is the award's patron.
