Investigating pressing questions on global warming and identifying potential solutions: with this focus, the “Young Climate Scientists Award” bestowed by Universität Hamburg’s Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) has now begun its third round: outstanding bachelor’s and master’s theses addressing climate-change- and climate-protection-related topics can be submitted until March 31 , 2024. Final papers focusing on the natural sciences, social sciences, economics or humanities and taht have been submitted at Universität Hamburg from April 1, 2022 onwards are welcome. First prize is €5,000, second is €3,000 and third is €2,000.
The prize money is provided by the Gesellschaft Harmonie von 1789 e.V.: “We want to reinforce Hamburg’s standing as a center for climate research. And we particularly want to provide support for young researchers. Our hope is that the prize will give them additional motivation and support their budding careers,” says Otto Bischoff from the Gesellschaft Harmonie.
As Prof. Dr. Grischa Perino, Director of the CEN, underscores: “Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time – there’s much to do for society, political decision-makers, the business world and scientific community alike. By awarding this prize, our goal is to recognize young talents who are pursuing research into climate-relevant topics and, by doing so, are helping ensure a future worth living on our planet.” Katharina Fegebank, Second Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and Senator at Hamburg’s Ministry of Science, Research, Equality and Districts, is the award’s patron.
