ECMWF ORAS5 backward extension
Area: Global
Period: 1958-1978
Data available: YES
Attention! The interpolated r1x1 degree data in both ORAS5 and ORAS5 backward extension are affected by a land-sea-mask issue during interpolation, and exhibit some anomalous points near coast/ocean bottom. By using the correct LSM, you can mask out all these anomalous points in r1x1 archived data as described in this Correction to ORA S5 r1x1 files manual (pdf, not barrier-free). The ORAS5 and ORAS5 backward extension data in native resolution are not affected.
Description: The ORAS5 backward extension covers 1958 to 1978 period, with one ensemble member. System configurations of model, resolution and assimilation method are exactly the same as in ORAS5. It comprises two spin-up periods for ORAS5. The first spin-up covers the 1958 to 1974 period (INI1 in Zuo et al., 2018) in a configuration similar to ORAP5 (ORAP5 initialization; ERA40 forcing without wave effects; in-situ profiles from EN3 data set, SST and sea-ice from ERA40). A second spin-up covers the 1975 to 1978 period in the same settings as used for ORAS5.
